Why are there increasing negative remarks directed at Christianity? A lack of respect if you will?

What has happened in the past 50 years or so that has begun to discredit the beliefs of Christians and their faith? As I view these questions and answers it seems to me there is an increase in expressed disatisfaction with Christianity and what it stands for, or at least a lack of respect or understanding. What has changed in the past few decades to precipitate these negative responses?
