What's the definition of phosphodiester backbone?

It is the backbone of a molecule of DNA. The phosphodiester backbone carries a lot of negative charge. If thinking of a DNA molecule as a twisted ladder, the nitrogenous bases are the rungs, and the phosphodiester backbone is part of the sides. The five carbon sugar deoxyribose makes up the other part of the backbone.
