Can u play online on a ps3 like u can on xbox live?

can u play online with other people like you can on xbox live.......? And i just returned the xbox360 because modern warfare 2 sucked(i got to play for like an hour and the xbox said it was unreadable)and now im going to by the ps3 and i was wondering if u could play online with other people?
